"Waste policy is arguably the next biggest environmental challenge facing the UK after climate change."
(UK Cabinet Office, 2001)

Changing the way we manage waste in the UK is vital to achieving more sustainable development.

At the moment we rely heavily on landfill to dispose of our waste. This can not continue if the UK is to meet its legal obligations under the European Union Landfill Directive to reduce waste to landfill.

Waste Strategy 2000 for England and Wales, published by the UK Government, gives a framework for improving our waste management. It presents a 'waste hierarchy' of environmentally preferable options.

The UK Government and the EU have made recycling a key part of improving management of waste.

1. Reduce waste
  2. Re-use waste
  3. Recovery (recycling; composting; energy recovery)
  4. Disposal (landfill)
